Windows Phone 7.8 Update Launched

WINDOWS PHONE 7.8 LAUNCHEDWindows Phone 7.8 is officially available as an update for existing Windows Phone users. It's yet to come to Nokia 710 and other phones, but has hit Lumia 800 and Samsung Omnia Series as an update. You can download the update as soon as you connect your Windows Phone to your PC, using the Zune software. You may also want to check out the top Windows Phone apps.
The update installed in 3 steps, when done on a Lumia 800.

The 1st update was an update from Nokia that offered support for phones with no physical camera button.
The 2nd update was from Microsoft and was aimed at improving the tile screen plus adding certain new features.

The 3rd update was the final update which installed 7.8 on your device.
After restarting the phone, you will notice some changes in the UI of the phone.
The first visible change is in the boot screen. It has been changed, to this
BOOT SCREEN

Pluses
The next change comes in the start screen of the phone. In 7.5, it was a mere collection of tiles that could be shifted from one location to another. Nothing else could be done there. But in Windows Phone 7.8, you can resize the tiles. They come in 3 sizes and you can choose among the two. Note that this is the same start screen as available in Windows Phone 8.

In 7.8, you get 20 more themes to customize your phone with. Plus, it adds support for new languages. You also get to make the Bing Picture Of the Day as your lock screen. It also enhances the battery life which many users had complained previously.

A Omina W user also told us that his camera got improved when he updated to 7.8. He could focus the images more easily this time. However, nothing of that sort was reported in Lumia 800 ( Do leave comments).

When you have updated your phone to 7.8, many of your apps may need to be updated. 9Gag, UC Browser etc have got updated in my phone after updating my phone.

Minuses
No significant fix was offered by this release. The new start screen does look nice in the first place but sadly that's where it ends. Many applications in 7.8, are already outdated. Ex :- Rowi, Facebook. Plus, you the Internet Explorer does'nt get a upgrade from 9 to 10. Its still the same browser which used to lag in some areas.

The Borderline
Though 7.8 may be great on paper, but when you have it installed on a phone, it appears lacklustre. If you are envious of the WP8 phones out there, then WP7.8 may not serve the purpose fully. We give it only
a 3/5.
